Workshop on the Teaching of the Modern Greek Language at Universities in North, Central & South America

September 15, 2007
Onassis Cultural Center, Olympic Tower, NY

The Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation (USA) organized an international Workshop on the teaching of the Greek language in Universities of North, Central and South America with the participation of twenty seven Hellenists from the United States, Canada, Argentina, Chile, and Mexico. The Workshop was chaired by Dr. George Babiniotis, Professor of Linguistics and former Rector of the University of Athens. Participants focused on topics related, among others, to the methods and means of instruction with a special emphasis on the integration of new technologies and the Internet in language courses, the importance of enhancing Greek language instruction with a parallel examination of the history of the Greek language, culture and literature, the prospects of cooperation among professors and Universities, and the essential role of the teaching of the Greek language at Universities in the broader development and the future of Modern Greek Studies Programs.
